EndNote is a reference management and bibliography-creation software system that enables you to keep all your references and reference-related materials in a searchable personal library and use your references in word-processing documents to create formatted citations and bibliographies or independent reference lists. There are 2 versions of EndNote: 1. EndNote (sometimes called EndNote desktop, this is the full version of EndNote; installed on your hard drive) 2. EndNote Online (free, cloud-based version, with less features. Formerly called EndNote Basic/EndNote Web)

Option 1: EndNote (desktop)
Option for students / university researchers / EH staff with university affiliations:
The full version of EndNote is available through an educational institution licence (eg. EH Staff with an university affiliation will be able to download and install EndNote desktop (EndNote X9 or 20 from their university library) to own computers.
Own-purchase via EndNote
To install EndNote on EH computers / laptops, EH IT admin authentication is requested. Please contact EH IT to proceed.
You can also sync your EndNote Library via EndNote Online.
For EndNote X6, X7 & X8 users who do not already have an EndNote Online account:
Update to EndNote 20 is required for synchronisation to work according to Clarivate
Option 2: EndNote Online (formerly called EndNote Basic/EndNote Web):
The free version of EndNote Online gives you access to many features of EndNote desktop including the ability to maintain references and PDFs in your personal library, and to create formatted citations and bibliographies. But please note the following:
(If you have EndNote desktop, you can also sync your EndNote Online library to your desktop library.)
EndNote X9 and EndNote 20 users should use the EndNote Online Classic while EndNote 21 users should use EndNote Web.

RefWorks is a reference management system. Please note that free access to RefWorks provided by Clinicians Health Channel is no longer available since 1st Oct 2022.
There are alternatives to RefWorks, such as EndNote, Mendeley and Zotero. A comparison between those alternatives may help you choose the reference management tool that suits your research needs best. If you have further questions, you are welcome to contact us for assistance.
