Saving, sharing & exporting your searches

Saving and/or exporting your search results will allow you to run your search strategy again at a later date, and share your search results with others.
 

Saving & sharing your search strategy

OVID databases (Medline, Embase, Emcare, PsycInfo)

Save:

  1. Click the  button. 
  2. Choose between temporary (24 hours), permanent or AutoAlert (SDI). If you set up an auto alert, you will get notifications about new articles based on the parameters of your search.
  3. Put in a name for your search and click 'Save'.

Share:

  1. Click on  to copy the permalink to the search.
  2. Click on  to copy your search history in text format.
  3. Click on  to email a copy of the permalink and search history to yourself.

CINAHL

Save:

  1. Tick the 'Select all' box and click 'Save Searches / Alerts'. You will be asked to sign in.
  2. Put in a name for the search.
  3. Choose between saved search (permanent), saved search (temporary, 24 hours) or alert. If you choose alert, you will get notifications about new articles based on the parameters of your search.
  4. Click 'Save'.

Share:

  1. Click on the  button.
  2. Copy the permalink.

Cochrane Library

Save:

  1. Click on the  button and click 'Save as'. You will be asked to log in to your Wiley account.
  2. Put in a name for the search and click 'Save as'.

Share:

  1. Click on the  button. You will be asked to log in.
  2. Look for your search in your saved searches and click on the  button.
  3. Copy the permalink for your search.

PubMed

Save:

  1. Log in to your My NCBI account.
  2. Go to PubMed and complete your search. Click 'Create alert', located below the search bar.
  3. Put in the name of your search. If you want to be notified of new search results relating to your search, click 'Yes' and choose your frequency. Click 'Save' when you are finished.
  4. To see your saved searches, click your account name at the top right-hand side of the screen. Click 'Dashboard'.
  5. Your saved search results can be found under 'Saved Searches'.

Share:

  1. Copy the URL from your browser's address bar. That's it! The URL should look something like this: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=search where search is your search term(s).

Exporting search results

OVID databases (Medline, Embase, Emcare, PsycInfo)

  1. Tick the 'All' button or select the items you want individually.
  2. Click the  button and the 'Export Citations' window will pop-up.
  3. Under 'Format', you can select popular formats such as Microsoft Word, PDF, Excel Sheet, EndNote or RIS.
  4. Under 'Fields, the commonly used options are 'Citation, Abstract' or 'Complete Reference'.
  5. Under 'Citation Style', choose 'Ovid Citation'.
  6. Other options:
    • Link to External Resolver: The LibKey Nomad browser extension MUST be installed BEFORE you begin exporting for this to work. Tick this option to export a LibKey Link that allows you to find full-text PDFs with one click.
    • URL: Tick this option to export the article URL (provided by the database or publisher).
    • Search History: Tick this option to export your Ovid search history along with your results.
  7. When you are happy with your settings, click the 'Export' button.
  8. You can export up to 2000 results at a time.

CINAHL

  1. Select the individual items you want by clicking . To select all the items on the page, click the  button and select 'Results (1-50)'. You will have to repeat this for each page of results to add all items.
  2. Click on 'Folder View'.
  3. Click on 'Select All' and 'Export'.
  4. You can now choose your export format. Some commonly used ones are RIS, EndNote Web, BibTeX or CSV.
  5. If you do not want the items you have saved to remain in the folder after exporting, tick the box for 'Remove these items from folder after saving'. Click 'Save' and your download will begin.

Another way to quickly export your results in RIS format is by clicking on the 'Share' button.

Under 'Export Results', click the 'E-mail a link to download exported results' link. You can export up to 25,000 results using this method.

Cochrane Library

  1. Tick the  box or select each item individually.
  2. Click 'Export selected citation(s)'.
  3. You can now choose your export format. Some commonly used ones are plain text, RIS (EndNote), RIS (Reference Manager), BibTeX, or CSV.
  4. You can export up to 20,000 results at a time.

PubMed

  1. Tick the box next to each item to select them individually. If you want to export all the results, skip to step 2.
  2. Click the 'Send to' button located below the search bar, followed by 'Citation Manager'.
  3. Under 'Selection', you can choose 'All results on this page', 'All results' or 'Selection'. Note that the maximum number of items that can be exported at a time is 10,000.
  4. Click 'Create File'. Your search results will be exported in RIS format.
